Dry Needling

Dry Needling is a skilled intervention performed by a specially trained clinician utilizing small filament needles that are inserted in to the skin and advanced in to the muscle.  These single use needles are directed at the myofascial trigger points (tight band of muscle) and surrounding tight tissues that are the source of pain.  The stimulation from a needle elicits a muscle twitch and causes biochemical changes resulting in an immediate relaxation of the tight muscle and facilitates healing.

This highly effective treatment quickly reduces muscle spasm, tension, nerve irritation and pain with long lasting effects.  It disrupts the pain cycle allowing the muscle time to heal while reducing stress from the adjacent joints.   The results are increased joint range of motion, improved functional muscle activity, a stronger nerve conduction and decreased pain.

At Complete Body Wellness Studio, our mission is to choose the most appropriate type of treatment that is right for you.  If dry needling is determined to be of benefit to you, a thorough explanation of what to expect will be discussed prior to the treatment.   Dry needling can be successfully used to treat a variety of acute and chronic conditions, such as shoulder, back and neck pain, hip or buttock pain, sciatic pain, knee pain, calf tightness, fibromyalgia or osteoarthritis.

Dry needling is often combined with a broader physical therapy approach including manual soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, therapeutic exercise and stretch, and teaching good posture awareness.

Dry needling is not the same as acupuncture.  Even though the same type needle is used, the theory and technique are not the same.
